Coach McCulloch says this about the offense:
Derek Elliott returns as our most established offensive weapon this season. A dynamic play maker with both speed and toughness, Elliott has proven he can score from anywhere on the field. Between rushing, receiving and kick returns, Elliott scored 15 touchdowns last season and averaged 139 all purpose yards/game. Elliott is a guy that needs to have the ball in his hands, and we'll get it to him in a variety of ways.

We'll have a new quarterback in 2013 after graduating two-year starter Tommy Zinke. The starting QB spot is up for grabs as we head into fall camp. Whoever emerges will need to form a bond with our returning group of receivers. Colby Lum, James Gaynor and Zach Johnson all saw time at receiver last season during their first year at VCSU and will be expected to make big strides this season. Lum emerged as a solid threat late last year, tallying 18 catches for 323 yards and three touchdowns. At tight end, we're looking for a big jump in production from Jake Miller.

Of course, it all starts with the guys up front: the offensive line. George Trujillo is coming off a great sophomore season in which he was named All Conference. He'll anchor the offensive line this year as a Team Captain. Taylor Carvalho is another key returner on the offensive line, but there will be some spots up for competition heading into the season.

With only five starters returning, there are definitely some holes to fill offensively this year, but we saw some great play in spring ball and look forward to our guys carrying that over into games. With key returners on the o-line, in the backfield and outside, we'll have enough weapons to be dangerous right away for the season opener.
Coach McCulloch says this about the defense:
We're coming off a very strong year that saw our defense record two shutouts. We will return five starters off of last year's defense.

We'll rely heavily on senior DB Jake Thurston, one of our 2013 captains. Jake has a motor that does not quit. Look for him to fly around the field making big plays for us out of the defensive backfield. He is a two-time all conference selection - once at linebacker and once at DB - and last year recorded 56 tackles. Thurston is part of a solid core returning in the defensive backfield. He's joined by junior Pathen Asuncion who had 42 tackles as a sophomore last season.

The last two seasons, we've had huge years from senior defensive linemen. In 2011 it was Jordan Maher, and in 2012 it was Aaron Freije. This year, Matt Craft could be the one poised for a huge year on the defensive line. The senior from Fairbanks, Alaska recorded 49 tackles and 3.5 sacks last season. Look for those numbers to go up in his final year at VCSU. Also keep an eye out for DE Dwanye Fearon, who had 54 tackles and 4 sacks as a junior.

As with offense, we have some holes to fill defensively after losing six starters to graduation, but our guys are hungry to continue the Viking football defensive tradition. After going 16-5 the past two seasons, the expectations are high to continue our winning ways.
