Point University

The Point University Sky Hawks are another Independent entering just their second season of NAIA football.  Last fall Head Coach David Rocker, (Auburn ’90) began a program that has potential to be one of the better NAIA teams with a little time.  Located in West Point, GA, near the Alabama border, Point has a seasoned coaching staff that should be able to build a solid program as the only NAIA football school in Georgia and only Faulkner in Alabama.

Last year the run game suffered as expected for a first year program, gaining 88 yards an outing.  But help has arrived in the form of RB’s Rufus Mason 6-2 207 and Antonio Herron 5-8 210.  Mason gained over 2,000 yards in JC ball in 2012 while Herron’s senior year in H.S. showed over 1300 yards gained.  Two QB’s threw for over 800 yards apiece in 2012, but only Kier Houston, 6-2 205 returned.  He’ll be pushed by several incoming freshmen.  William Eichman 6’ 190 led the receivers in catches yards and scores last fall.  If the ground game takes off, the offense could explode in 2013.

On defense is where the Skyhawks will need the most improvement after allowing 37 points per game.  DB Rodrick Tolen 5-11 187 is the leading tackler back and will have help from LB Albert Trammell 6-2 205, DB Dominic Freemen, 5-7 170 and DL Maceo Cummins, 6-2 247.  Above all else, the defense will strive for consistency in 2013 as only 3 players participated in every game last fall.  Just having a healthy squad all year will help Point improve on a 2-win campaign.
