Southwestern Assemblies of God University

SAGU stands for Southwestern Assemblies of God University.  Since its entry into the NAIA, SAGU has not broken the .500 barrier, but the purple clad Lions have been getting closer lately with back-to-back 4-6 season marks.  This might be the year Coach Jesse Godding makes good on the deal.  He starts 2013 with a veteran QB in Reid Golson who ran for 705 yards and passed for 1800 more in 2012 when he ranked 18th in NAIA total offense.  Golson will have So Jeremy McDonald and Sr Trevor McKinley as key wide outs.  The top two RB return in Cale Leuschner and Landry Martinez, who was named all-league as a freshman.  Opening up holes for them and Golson will be four starters back on the O-line led by Peter Akokrian, another all-CSFL pick.  Defensively, the secondary is crazy good again this fall led by Shakeem Taylor.  3 other DB’s received praise from Godding after spring practice: Deonte Morrison, Glendez Matthews & Trevor Van-Kempen.  The top three tacklers from 2012 return also: DB Brad Heathcock and LB’s Rockie Davis & Dalton Snyder while up front DJ Johnson is solid at 6-4 300.  This is a very young squad with experience already.  Of the players mentioned above, only Johnson is a senior to be.  This will be a very competitive group of Lions, not only in 2013, but beyond.
