Wayland Baptist

The other Texas team is Wayland Baptist who entered NAIA play last fall with a 2-8 record as an independent.  This year as a conference member, the Pioneers have their sights set on a winning record too.  With a schedule that should be slightly easier than 2012, WBU could be a surprise in the league.  Head Coach Butch Henderson has 21 starters back and the team has a year under their belt.  The run game is in good hands with Kendall Robertson, 6’ 210 back after gaining nearly 700 yards and scoring 11 times in 2012.  However, the QB spot may be up for grabs again after freshmen Anthony Campuzano, Luis Gonzalez and Braden Hudson shared duty.  Whoever wins the spot will have Chris Acosta, leading receiver, to throw to.  The O-line is back in strength and the year experience should improve play.  It is on defense where the Pioneers will need to improve most.  They allowed more than 44 ppg in a league known more for its D than its offensive prowess.  Leading tacklers, Jon-Lucas Poe, 6’ 205 & David Hockenberry, 6-2, 195, returns at LB & safety respectively.  Both should be up for conference honors.  DT William Chiado, 6-2, 305 led the squad in sacks & TFL and should be a force in the middle.  With improvement on defense in year two and a reduction in turnovers, WBU should be a better team and could surprise a few contenders this fall.
