Midland University

The Warriors appear to be a fairly young team entering the 2013 season with just seven returning starters from a team that went 4-6 a season ago. Head Coach Josh Gehring has been a big part of very successful programs, Morningside and Wisconsin-Whitewater. He will find a way to get Midland back in the mix in the GPAC. And it starts with the quarterback. Mike Karls enters fall camp as the starter after taking over part way into the season in 2012. Lee Horky will push for the job after starting games in 2011 and beginning the 2012 season as the guy under center. Karls has the ability to be a dangerous passer as well as on the ground. The feeling in Fremont is that the offense will be improved enough to make Midland a contender in the conference in 2013.

Despite the losing record the Midland defense was the fifth-best scoring defense in the GPAC last season giving up 22.2 points per game. The unit will look to improve on total defense after giving up 390 yards per game to opposing offenses.

Thoughts: The Midland schedule is a fovrable start for the Warriors. They host Mayville State to open the season before traveling to Dordt and a return home for a game against Concordia. The Warriors have a good chance to be 3-0 before playing Doane and Morningside in back-to-back weeks. The key to a young team is to build confidence early and you never know what might happen. This schedule allows for just that.
